Million Books Project (MBP) is a reading initiative program founded by Carol Bangura in 2008 as a way to give back to her country of birth Sierra Leone in West Africa. Since then MBP has acquired 53,662 books towards Carol's goal of providing one million books to children to encourage book ownership, reading and improve literacy.
 
Project Sierra Leone provides free new or gently used books to children directly or through churches, mosques, schools and community partners.To date, over 25,000 books have been donated to this project.MBP has expanded to include scholarships to children in Sierra Leone, West Africa. In April 2011, 3 full scholarships to the Albert Academy School for Boys. Books have been donated to the following:

  • St. Joseph's Secondary School
  • Free the Children Primary School
  • Kono Junior Secondary School
  • Albert Academy
  • Bright Hope Baptist Church, Sierra Leone
  • Peter Kamaray School
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters Sierra Leone
  • Moyamba District Council Library
 
***MILLION BOOKS PROJECT'S FOCUS IS TO PROMOTE READING AND LITERACY AND IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY POLITICAL PARTY IN SIERRA LEONE.***
 
Multicultural Initiative provides free books to children of various cultures in Philadelphia and Delaware counties via the African Center for Education and Sustainability. Additionally, MBP has provided books to children in Liberia, Ghana and Jamaica via community partners. 
 
100% of all donations to MBP will be use for program costs. No salaries or expenses are paid from MBP. Donors can allocate the programmatic recipient of their donation.
